2023 SEGD's 50th Anniversary Experience Washington DC: Framing the Past to Envision our Future

Our 50th Anniversary gathers interdisciplinary thought leaders in Washington, DC, August 23-26, 2023, to share inspiration, strategies and ideas designed to enhance the human experience.

The 2023 SEGD Conference Experience Washington DC will convene creative luminaries to explore the impact experiential design has had on our local and global communities. The Conference promises four inspirational days of interactive workshops, tours, networking opportunities, case studies, and programming from renowned speakers celebrating the evolution and challenges of 50 years of experiential design.

Conference chairs L'Rai Arthur-Mensah of Local Projects and Alexey Ikonomou of Ashton Design will curate unique and compelling opportunities for connection, co-creation, and conversation—to deepen and forge future thinking.

Jonathan Alger is the Managing Partner and a co-founder of C&G Partners. He is a multi-specialist designer with a focus on interactive public space, brand, and digital. With over two decades of experience, he is a dedicated advocate of strategic thinking and the thoughtful use of technology.

His clients include American Express, Boston Public Library, Bronx Zoo, Chase, Federal Reserve, Holocaust Museum, Japanese-American National Museum, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, JPMorgan, Los Angeles Public Library, Library of Congress, MasterCard, Museum of American Finance, Museum of Jewish Heritage, NASDAQ, NASA, National Museum of American History, New York Stock Exchange, New York University, Smithsonian, Sports Illustrated, TIAA-CREF, US Department of State and the Voice of America.

Jonathan has been honored by the American Institute of Graphic Arts, American Association of Museums, American Association of State and Local History, Art Director’s Club, Communication Arts, Industrial Design Society of America, National Endowment for the Humanities, Society for Environmental Graphic Design, Type Director’s Club and the Webbys.

He is a National Design Award Finalist and a two-time winner of the AAM MUSE technology awards. He served two terms as national President of SEGD, the Society for Experiential Graphic Design. He has been featured on the cover of Graphic Design USA’s “People to Watch” and has been profiled in Interior Design magazine. Before co-founding C&G Partners, Jonathan was a Principal at the design firm Chermayeff & Geismar Inc.

Jonathan graduated from Yale University, B.A. with honors and distinction in Architecture, magna cum laude. He lives in Park Slope, Brooklyn with his wife and two boys.

Hannah Anderson has over a decade of experience in experiential graphic design and leadership. Hannah oversees the successful detailing and implementation of design solutions through her Construction Administration Lead role at Kolar Design. She also performs on the firm’s Operations Team, developing strategies and tools for studio improvement, efficiencies, workflow, and culture. Hannah’s current appointment on the SEGD Board has seated her on multiple programming and fundraising committees for the organization and its events. She is also the former co-chair for the SEGD Cincinnati Chapter. While chapter co-chair, Hannah helped secure the authorization for, and aided in the branding effort of the Cincinnati Center for Architecture + Design, which houses five major design trade organizations under one roof. Prior to Kolar Design, Hannah spent 8 years as experiential and in-house graphic designer at a local architecture and design firm in Cincinnati. Hannah Anderson performed on multi-disciplinary teams to create successful and award-winning designs for the built environment in a wide range of market sectors. In addition to her EGD work, Hannah enjoys speaking engagements and guest appointments with AIGA Cincinnati, SEGD Cincinnati Chapter events, UC College of DAAP, the Art Academy of Cincinnati, and at the SEGD national conference. She has a degree in Graphic Design from the University of Cincinnati, College of DAAP.

John Berry and Rich Burns were the original founders of SEGD.

John has over forty four years of professional design experiences, including senior leadership positions and advisory roles in the contract furniture industry.

John developed and led the IGS Division (Interiors, Graphics & Signage) of Smith Hinchman & Grylls (now The Smith Group.)

He was Vice President of Corporate Communications for Herman Miller with responsibilities including marketing communications, events, corporate archives, architectural and design programs, and public relations, was liaison between Herman Miller and the Eames Office and continues with the Eames Office as publicist and liaison back to Herman Miller. His book, ‘Herman Miller: The Purpose of Design’ published by Rizzoli is the basis for a traveling exhibit.

John has been an adjunct professor at Grand Valley State University and guest lecturer for the Kendall College Art and Design and Ferris State University MBA Certificate on Design and Innovation management. He is a past board member of; the Michigan Humanities Council, OxBow Art and Artist’s school affiliated with the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, Grand Rapids Art Museum, Kendall College of Art and Design and a current member of the national advisory committee for Cranbrook Academy of Art.

John is the Executive Director of Design West Michigan and directs an advisory group of over 40 leading regional and national designers with a membership of over 1,000 designers. He was instrumental in the development of a new degree; BFA in Collaborative Design for Kendall College and is currently helping in the development of a Masters in Design.

John has a Masters of Fine Arts in Design from Cranbrook Academy of Art, a BA in Design and Spanish from Indiana University with related studies at DePauw University and La Universidad de Nacional de Mexico.

1987 SEGD Fellow and Past President 1979-1986

A casual meeting between Rich Burns, John Berry and Jim Glass to discuss new professional opportunities designing signs, led to the founding of SEGD. Joined by a few others who found themselves working in the arena of sign design (signage was a term yet to be created by the group), the Society for Environmental Graphics was brought to life in 1973. Rich became a zealot for the organization and committed himself and the resources of his practice, the GNU Group, to legitimizing the professional discipline and the organization. He served as one of SEGD’s first Presidents and stewarded many of the Society’s early initiatives that ultimately spawned a viable professional association. In 1987, Rich, along with Jim Glass, were named as the Society's first Fellows.

As was true of many of the Society’s early members, Rich was an accidental entrant into the world of environmental graphics. Along with his brother Steve, he launched a fledging traditional graphic design practice. One of their first clients was the SWA Group, landscape architects and planners, who asked them to design a branding and signage program for a new master planned community. It was this assignment that prompted Rich to join John and Jim in the momentous meeting that gave rise to SEGD.

The practice became a part of the SWA Group which led to many more opportunities to pursue the world of signage and environmental graphics. In1974 the firm was rebranded as the GNU Group. Rich guided the GNU Group through its first two decades, becoming an important force for the profession. His engagement with SEGD continued to propel its growth, and his focus on positioning, branding and marketing of real estate led to innumerable environmental graphic projects for GNU.

As a long time member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI), Rich originated the curriculum, and for many years taught their comprehensive workshop on Marketing Real Estate. It was an opportunity to introduce the importance of environmental graphics to the real estate community.

He now describes his retirement as ‘going poorly’, as he continues to provide consulting services for a number of clients and volunteer organizations.

Erik Bär is director and founder of Tinker imagineers. He has a master's degree in Artificial Intelligence. In the company, Erik is the art director and manages all 2D, 3D and audio-visual designs and products. He is mainly responsible for account and creative direction: the translation of the client’s needs, wishes and ambitions into compelling visions and inspiring designs. He previously delivered FLUGT Refugee Museum of Denmark and Tirpitz Museum, both in Denmark and together with BIG architects. He is currently working, among other things, on the BBC Earth Experience, together with the BBC. Furthermore, he has been responsible for concept development and art direction for various museums and visitor centres worldwide. In 2018, Erik published Worlds of Wonder, experience design for curious people, together with co-founder Stan. This book describes immersive design projects, from their first concept until final installation. The Why, What and How of this exciting form of storytelling is revealed by these two pioneers in the field.

Tinker imagineers is an experience design agency located in the Netherlands, founded in 1991 by Stan Boshouwers and Erik Bär. The award-winning agency is specialised in museums, experiences, heritage and culture all over the world with a focus on Europe. Tinker designs and builds narrative spaces. Vibrant story worlds that engage, inspire and even transform visitors of all ages.

Chris Calori is Principal Emerita of Entro Communications and a Founding Partner of Calori & Vanden-Eynden / Design Consultants, also known as CVEDesign.

Chris and David Vanden-Eynden founded their New York City-based design office in 1983, which merged with Toronto-based Entro Communications in 2018. CVEDesign’s work has received numerous awards and has been recognized in national and international books and periodicals. Chris holds MA and BSID degrees from The Ohio State University.

Chris is a Fellow of the SEGD, among other honors and professional memberships. She has been a design educator and a frequent speaker and juror at academic and professional events.

She is the author of the EGD field’s definitive professional reference book, Signage and Wayfinding Design: A Complete Guide to Creating Environmental Graphic Design Systems, now in its 2nd edition. A longtime advocate of pragmatic approaches to accessible signage, she co-authored the SEGD’s 2012 ADA White Paper Update, and has participated in several SEGD presentations on the ADA signage provisions

Emily Cohen, Founder & Partner at Casa Davka, is a no-nonsense business consultant who has partnered with 500+ leading creative firms worldwide. Emily is a frequently-requested main stage speaker within the creative industry and has spoken at hundreds of international, national, and local conferences and events for organizations such as: Creative Mornings, AIGA, Association of Registered Graphic Designers (RGD), and Creative South.

In 2018, she self-published her business book for creatives, Brutally Honest: No-bullshit business strategies to evolve your creative business. Brutally Honest has become a go-to business book for creative industry professionals worldwide and several universities use it as a teaching tool.

Emily is a designer by degree, an avid reader, a dog-lover, a trend-spotter, a connection-builder, and an industry advocate.

An architect in SmithGroup’s Cultural practice, Monteil recognizes “the vital role that museums and cultural institutions play in shaping our collective understanding of history and culture.” Yet that narrative, he says, has long been dominated by Eurocentric and Western perspectives. “People of color and their perspectives have been left out of the main discourse of architecture and design. By giving marginalized communities a platform to share their stories, my work strives to ensure that these spaces represent the diversity of human experience—ultimately leading to a more just and equitable society.” Monteil says he has loved sketching and building things since his youth and discovered architecture through art. “Architecture is the built form of poetry,” he remarks. “It was architecture’s ability to create meaning, evoke emotion and connect us that drew me to the profession.” Monteil has always had an affinity for 3D puzzles, too: He has mastered 5x5 Rubik’s cubes, he reports, “but my favorite to solve is the Megaminx, a 12-sided dodecahedron.”

Llisa Demetrios has spent her adult life caring for the Eames Collection and curating the Eames Ranch, initially alongside her mother, Lucia Eames, and now as Chief Curator alongside the Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity team. Llisa loves welcoming guests, be they Eames aficionados or people entirely unfamiliar with design. Before the advent of the Institute, Llisa facilitated the loans for "The World of Charles & Ray Eames" exhibition that started at the Barbican Centre in England in 2015 and continued to Sweden, Portugal, Belgium, Germany, Michigan, and the Oakland Museum of California in February 2019. Llisa also worked in the Mies van der Rohe Archive at MoMA, and has spoken globally. She is a founding and current member of the Eames Foundation Board of Directors, which oversees the historic Eames House in Los Angeles, and also a shareholder of the Eames Office. Llisa is also the chairperson of the Petaluma Arts Center Board of Directors, and curator of its current exhibition of collections built by Petaluma residents.

Wendy Evans Joseph, the founder of Studio Joseph, is a visionary architect known for her hands-on approach and unwavering commitment to design excellence. With a deep passion for art, culture, and public education, Wendy has established herself as a leading figure in museum design and exhibition installations. At Studio Joseph, she sets the vision for each project based on specific parameters and broader societal values that talk about equity and community.

Under Wendy’s leadership, Studio Joseph has delivered a diverse portfolio of impactful public, institutional, and cultural projects. The firm creates immersive environments that foster shared learning and engagement. Wendy seamlessly integrates technology, graphic design, and materiality in elegant spatial settings. Her ability to fuse architecture with other disciplines has garnered accolades and recognition throughout her career.

Wendy’s contributions to the architectural community extend beyond her exceptional design work. She has been honored with a Rome Prize in Architecture from the American Academy in Rome and holds the prestigious title of Academician of the National Academy of Design. Actively involved in professional leadership, she has held esteemed positions such as President of the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, Chairman of the AIA National Committee of Design,
and President of the Architectural League of New York.

Prior to establishing Studio Joseph, Wendy spent twelve years at Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, where she made significant contributions to large-scale public, institutional, and cultural projects. She received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and pursued her Master’s in Architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design. She is a LEED Accredited Professional reflecting her dedication to
sustainable design.

With her keen design sensibility, unwavering dedication to artistic and educational imperatives, and forward-thinking approach to the architectural practice, Wendy Evans Joseph continues to shape the industry and leave a lasting impact through her transformative work at Studio Joseph.

She has served on the SEGD board since 2016, co-founded the SEGD Portland Chapter and was Chair of the 2019 SEGD Global Design Awards.

Kathy is a principal at Mayer/Reed, a Portland, Oregon based design studio providing visual communications, interior design, urban design and landscape architecture. She directs the visual communications and interiors group in the design of signage, wayfinding, interpretive elements, landmarks and branded spaces for civic, transportation, cultural, healthcare, education, mixed-use and corporate settings.

Her portfolio includes the Vancouver Community Library (Vancouver, WA), Bud Clark Commons (Portland, OR), San Ysidro Land Port of Entry (San Ysidro, CA), OMSI District Wayfinding (Portland, OR), TriMet Orange Line (Portland, OR) and University of Washington Urban Solutions Center (Tacoma, WA).

Kathy’s work has been recognized with awards from the Oregon Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects and SEGD. Her projects are featured in Wayshowing>Wayfinding and Signage and Wayfinding Design: A Complete Guide to Creating Environmental Graphic Design Systems, 2nd Edition.

She is an honors graduate of Portland State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Design and a minor in sociology.

Michael Gericke is a partner in Pentagram’s New York office and joined the firm in 1985. Michael’s images and programs are known for celebrating and portraying the essential qualities of the place or experience he is representing. His work frequently crosses between image making, communications and the built environment, and encompasses a wide-range of design areas, including visual identities, environmental graphics, wayfinding, exhibitions, media programs, and advertising.

Michael has received hundreds of accolades from design associations and museums, including Fortune magazine's Beacon Award for the creation of outstanding strategic design programs. His identity, poster and three-dimensional work appears regularly in international design exhibitions and is represented in the permanent collections of the Musée de la Poste in Paris, the Warsaw Poster Museum at Wilanów, the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg, the Neue Sammlung Museum in Munich, Japan's Ogaki Museum and the Library of Congress in Washington, DC.

Michael Gericke has served on the Executive Committee of the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), is a frequent lecturer at universities and professional organizations, and has taught identity design at the Cooper Union for Advancement of Science and Art in New York. Michael is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI), the Advisory Council of the Center for Architecture, and the Board of Directors of the Society for Environmental Graphic Design.

Nu Goteh is a multi-disciplinary creative & designer who works in audio, visual, and written mediums. He is the co-founder of the strategy and design studio, Room for Magic, and co-founder and creative director of partner publication, Deem Journal. Additionally, Nu is a professor at Parsons School of Design, leading a course entitled Design Dichotomies which explores the intersection of design and society. Nu’s practice is informed by his love for counter/subculture(s), his background as a Liberian-born refugee, and a lifelong dedication to building platforms that enable communities to engage in shared experiences.

In 2005, Nu began working with brands just before completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. With a deeply informed understanding of sneaker culture, Nu transitioned from helping Puma develop content for this niche market to launching a full digital marketing strategy for the brand. This work laid the foundation for Nu’s exploration of how media platforms can help to shape and center lesser-heard narratives.

From here, Nu moved on to working in-house at RedBull and later to Sonos, where he further explored the ins and outs of building a brand. Skillfully, he created programming around music, art, and tech with a focus on adding real value and meaning to lifestyle branding.

Eventually, Nu found himself dispassionate with selling products. Disinterested in the idea of ‘cool,’ Nu decided to pivot to an analytical, research-driven approach to solving problems.

In 2016, Nu moved on to pursue a Masters Degree in Strategic Design Management at Parsons School of Design. He went from being a brand director, managing large teams and projects in Los Angeles to a grad student in New York, where he needed to re-acclimate to the learning environment. Parsons helped validate and resolve many of his ideas around human-centric design, problem-solving and its value for marginalized communities. It offered Nu a strong foundation and framework for approaching problem-solving, framing insights, and being able to articulate and communicate solutions. It was during this time that he worked as an Innovation Fellow at the design studio Openbox.

Shortly before finishing his Master’s, Nu joined the digital advertising agency AKQA as a strategist at their San Francisco office. He focused on using data to tell narratives that could be translated to creatives. It was here he realized he could be equal parts creative and a strategist, and that he didn’t fall squarely on either side. Nu began to understand that his process required autonomy and was most effective when he could fluctuate between the strategist and creative.

Evolving from his formative years in Massachusetts exploring Japanese Hip Hop magazines to a well-informed creative, Nu decided it was time to reimagined and reframe his relationship to work, and the type of projects he was interested in supporting. In 2018, he co-founded the independent design studio Room For Magic. His latest project is Deem Journal, which is the result of a decade of branding, research, strategic development, ideation, and production with the goal of creating equitable change into the way communities are being designed and represented. Deem Journal is a collaboration between Room for Magic and Openbox.

Paul oversees software development at Cortina Productions. His mastery of developing content-focused interactive experiences enables Paul to guide developers in architecting software and applying the best techniques and technologies to exceed client expectations. Paul graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in Fine Arts and has a wide ride of experience in animation, illustration, graphic design, and photography. This blend of skills gives him a unique perspective and allows him to bring a truly holistic approach to his work. Paul is also a certified Scrum Master, guiding project teams through the Agile software development process ensuring that projects are completed on time and to the highest standards.

Jarred Howard is principal of Sable Brands, LLC and chief executive officer at the National Juneteenth Museum.

A Fort Worth native, Jarred holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of North Texas and a Master of Business Administration Degree from Dallas Baptist University. Jarred launched his career in JP Morgan-Chase‚Äôs consumer banking division and later led marketing teams at DaimlerChrysler Financial Services. In 2006, Jarred commenced a 12-year stay at BNSF Railway, where he led a team in the Consumer Products business unit before assuming leadership of their economic development division. In 2018, Jarred became a department head at the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce and in 2020, he was recruited to lead Bell Textron‚Äôs external affairs division.

Jarred's hobbies include visiting African countries and studying the residual impact of the African diaspora.

Wayne Hunt founded Hunt Design in 1977 in Pasadena, Los Angeles and is a nationally recognized leader in Environmental Graphic Design and Wayfinding Signage design.

Wayne Hunt and the firm have planned, designed and implemented more than two hundred signage & graphics and exhibit assignments in twenty U.S. states and in countries around the world. He is active in the Society for Experiential Graphic Design, serving as its past national president and selected as the organization’s sole 2004 Fellow.

Wayne Hunt is the author of three books on signage and related graphics design and is an Adjunct Professor at Art Center College of Design. Alexey Ikonomou is Principal and Creative Director at Ashton Design in Baltimore, Maryland.

As a strategic thinker with a passion for all things designed, Alexey brings a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to his creative process. Over the course of his career, Alexey has developed and cultivated brands for many Fortune 500 clients, including Anheuser-Busch, BP, Gillette and Stanley Black & Decker, and has worked on architectural projects spanning the U.S., Great Britain, Korea, Berlin and Dubai, including the Architect of the Capitol, while at the global architectural firm RTKL.

Since joining Ashton Design in 2011, Alexey has led award-winning creative teams in crafting everything from niche identity systems for specialty businesses to large-scale experiential graphics for mixed-use developments, hospitality venues, schools and sports stadiums—including Baltimore’s Sagamore Pendry Hotel and L.A.’s Dodger Stadium. In 2020, Alexey became co-owner of Ashton Design.

He holds dual bachelor’s degrees in business marketing and advertising communications from Towson University and a graduate degree in graphic design from the Portfolio Center in Atlanta. He has won multiple design awards, including several prestigious National Design Awards, from the Society for Experiential Graphic Design (SEGD). Outside of Ashton, he can be found teaching in the Department of Art and Design at his alma mater and doing various projects with his wife and two children.

Claus Kjeld Jensen is the director of the Vardemuseums. He is an experienced museum director with a demonstrated history of working in the museums and institutions industry. Skilled in Museum Collections, Archaeology, Museums, History, and Museum Education. Strong arts and design professional with a Doctor of Philosophy - PhD focused in Archaeology from Aarhus University. During his time as director of Varde museums he has, among other things, been in charge of the establishment of Tirpitz Museum and the new museum FLUGT - Refugee Museum of Denmark. In addition, he is the chairman of The Organisation of Danish Museums, and chairman of the Conservation Center in Vejleand NAPA – the Nordic Institute in Greenland.

The Varde museums are a total of 10 different exhibition locations, including the two BIG designet museums Tirpitz and FLUGT (Refugee Museum). The Varde Museums are responsible for archeology as well as dissemination and collection of historical knowledge about landscape, nature and culture in Denmark’s westernmost region, Varde Municipality, and are an independent, state-recognized institution. The museum is run by a board appointed by the city council and the museum associations which is comprised of four active member associations with a total of almost 1,000 members.

Cybelle Jones is CEO, responsible for strategic leadership that fosters excellence in every aspect of SEGD to ensure member value, raised visibility of the profession and financial stewardship.

Previously, Cybelle was Principal and Executive Director of Gallagher & Associates. Her leadership and creative direction was integral to the success of the firm and to their position as one of the leading experience design firms. Cybelle Jones studied architecture at the University of Cincinnati and helped establish the Masters of Exhibition Design program at the Corcoran College of Art + Design in Washington D.C.

She received the 2014 SEGD Distinguished Member and was a SEGD Board member from 2006-2012. In addition, Cybelle Jones has received multiple honors including the American Institute of Architects Award of Excellence and has been a guest critic and speaker for organizations including SEGD Xlab, MuseumNext, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Communicating the Arts, American Alliance of Museums, Building Museums Symposium, International Council of Museums, The Fashion Institute of Technology and DAAP - University of Cincinnati.

Anica is HOK’s global sustainable design director, serving on the firm’s board of directors and design board. Based in Washington, D.C., Anica is a mayoral appointee to the District of Columbia’s Green Building Advisory Council and co-chairs the Building Energy Performance Standard Task Force. Anica is serving a third term on the Green and Energy Codes Committee, supporting the district’s decarbonization code development and advancement to a zero-carbon code by 2026. Nationally, Anica is a senior fellow of the New Buildings Institute, serves as incoming Chair of the USGBC LEED Steering Committee and on the AIA Government Advocacy Committee; is a former chair of the AIA Codes and Standards Committee; , and co-authored with the AIA Blue Ribbon Panel on Codes “Disruption, Evolution, and Change: AIA’s Vision for the Future of Design and Construction.” Her testimony before Congress and recommendations for building policies and incentives are included in the House Select Committee report “Solving the Climate Crisis: The Congressional Action Plan for a Clean Energy Economy and a Healthy, Resilient, and Just America” as well as the Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act of 2021 and the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.

Jenny Lee is an environmental graphic designer at ZGF with 18 years of experience in transformative visual storytelling and placemaking. She is known for crafting tailored graphic installations, engaging branded environments, fully integrated wayfinding and signage systems, and meaningful donor recognition concepts. Seamlessly intertwining narrative with physical space, she infuses the built environment with a sense of wonder and belonging, working closely with clients, project teams, and consultants, to develop enriching environments that inspire, guide, activate, and optimize navigation. In addition to creative vision and a collaborative ethos, Jenny brings business acuity and practical project management to the table, identifying new prospects, evaluating scope and fees, leading concept design, and overseeing execution from prototyping to installation to final touches. George Lim is the Founding Partner and Creative Director of Tangram Design, a lecturer at the University of Colorado School of Environmental Design, and an active member and supporter of the Society of Experiential Graphic Design. With over 30 years of professional experience, George has established himself as a leader in the practice of environmental graphic design and as an authority in the design of branded environments for culturally sensitive, municipal and private projects. His experience includes designing and implementing wayfinding signage systems and programming for airports, universities, municipalities, retail environments, resorts and parks and trails.

Tangram is a creative design firm whose design focus is the practice of environmental graphic design (EGD) – a discipline that involves the planning and design of branded signage and wayfinding programs. George has been involved with teaching environmental graphic design at the university level for over 20 years. With active involvement in educational efforts headed by SEGD and of his own personal accord, George developed EGD curriculums and workshops that are still being used in the classrooms of university campuses. George started his teaching career at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design where he established the first Degree in Graphic Design with an Emphasis in EGD. He also helped develop the SEGD Kent State University Summer Design Workshop, an intensive two week summer program that focused on the design of experiences, branded environments and wayfinding signage programs that became a direct supplier of qualified young designers to the EGD professional community.

George was the 2008 SEGD Angel Award honoree, former Denver Chapter Chair and past Board Member of the SEGD. Some of his efforts include creating and chairing the SEGD Young Designers Summit and creating and chairing the SEGD Academic Summit. He is currently SEGD's representative on the International Code Council's ADA & Building Codes Subcommittee, to advise in the updating of the new ADA guidelines as it relates to signage. He has also represented the SEGD in the review and writing of the codes and guidelines for the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) for Streets and Highways of the Federal Highway Administration.

George earned a Masters of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design and Digital Media from the Tyler School of Art, of Temple University in Philadelphia and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design from the University of Denver.

Chloe Louvouezo has dedicated her career to storytelling that advances storytelling to address social equity, gender equality and mental health.

She is currently a Senior Creative Producer at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation where she produces human-centered stories and creative content focused on women’s economic power and health. Prior to joining the foundation, she was Director of Communications for Services for the Underserved, one of the largest human services agencies in New York City, and Akilah Institute for Women, a women’s college in Kigali, Rwanda after working in public affairs at the start of her career.

Author of Life, I Swear: Intimate Stories from Black Women on Identity, Healing, and Self-Trust (HarperCollins Publishers, November 2021), Chloe’s writing and speaking is driven by discourse on identity and healing. The book is the winner of the 2022 San Francisco Book Festival, Non-Fiction, and overall winner of the 2022 Beach Book Festival. She is also the executive producer and host of the Life, I Swear podcast, with over 70 episodes, through which she explores nuances and insights around identity, mental wellness, and healing, through the lens of women from the Black diaspora.

She is locally engaged as a community-centered entrepreneur and curator. She sits on Washington, DC Mayor Bowser’s Commission for Women, through which she supports citywide initiatives championing health and human services and public policy safety for women. She also serves on the board member of HURU, which creates sacred spaces for rest experiences that foster emotional wellbeing and wholeness.

Chloe earned her B.A. in Journalism from Howard University with a concentration in Cultural Anthropology and her M.P.S. in Public Relations and Corporate Communications from Georgetown University. She holds a professional certificate in Diversity and Inclusion Leadership from Cornell University.

Strategist, Filmmaker, Founder and CEO of Murmur Ring, Ashley Lukasik curates powerful experiences that help creative leaders and organizations reconnect with their purpose. She has built her career exposing organizations to human-centered design as a means to respond to complex challenges for which they do not have a preexisting roadmap. Ashley spent several years at the visionary design school, IIT Institute of Design, which inspired her to launch and co-produce The New Bauhaus feature documentary with Opendox. Murmur Ring's global immersive experiences and multimedia content connect design pedagogy with emerging technology and culture. Ashley is Co-Chair of the Auxiliary Board for the Design Museum of Chicago and holds an M.A. in Anthropology from the University of Chicago. Her work has appeared in Architectural Digest, Design Milk, New York Times, Forbes, and more.

Bruce Mau is the Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Massive Change Network (MCN),
a global design consultancy in the Chicago Area. Bruce is a renowned designer, innovator,
educator, author and artist. His love of thorny problems led him to create a holistic,
systems-based methodology for life-centered design that serves as the foundation for the
MCN process and practice. Across nearly 40 years of design innovation, he’s collaborated with
global brands and companies, leading organizations, heads of state, renowned artists and
fellow optimists.

Along with MCN co-founder, Aiyemobisi “Bisi” Williams, Bruce created Massive Action, a
global multidisciplinary immersive learning initiative to collectively design a better future. Bruce
has a passionate interest in the art of books and has designed more than 250 of them. He
became an international figure with the 1995 publication of his landmark “S,M,L,XL,” designed
and co-authored with award-winning architect Rem Koolhaas. An author himself, Bruce’s most
recent books are “MAU MC24: Bruce Mau’s 24 Principles for Designing Massive Change in
Your Life and Work” and “THE NEXUS: Augmented Thinking for a Complex World — The New
Convergence of Art, Technology, and Science,” co-authored with Julio M. Ottino. Bruce’s work
and life story are the subject of the 2022 feature-length documentary, “MAU,” which premiered
at SXSW in 2021. Currently available on TVOD in North America, the film has brought design
into the cultural spotlight.

Chris McCampbell is is a senior experiential designer at CannonDesign, a global architecture and integrated design firm. With over 16 years of diverse experience, Chris has lent his creative and technical design skills to projects in the healthcare, education, civic and sports markets. His body of work includes wayﬁnding strategy, signage materplanning, branded graphics and interior design integration, as well as promotional materials, brand guidelines and logo concepts for a variety of clients. Chris’s passion for shaping the next generation of designers has led him to serve as an adjunct professor at both San Diego State University and Design Institute of San Diego leading classes in environmental graphic design and design software education. Chris is current chair of SEGD San Diego Chapter.

With work ranging from sector-defining-mega projects to radical start-ups, Wesley brings over 20 years of global design experience focusing on human experience in the built environment. As the Creative Director of UK-based f.r.a., he leads a studio that delivers wayfinding, placemaking and branding projects across all sectors. At the heart of every project is a deeply humanistic approach to design that uses emotions, narrative and even humour to overcome complex problems. The team at f.r.a go beyond ‘big ideas’ and have a strong focus on project delivery. Wesley’s commitment to ‘maker culture’ combined with business partner and f.r.a. Projects Director, Jamie Trippier’s background in manufacturing produces a studio culture that sees the constraints and challenges of delivering a project as a source of great inspiration and an opportunity for innovation.

Suejin Park is a senior experiential graphic designer at ZGF. An artist at heart, she finds joy in helping others bring their ideas to life and has more than 12 years of experience creating opportunities for people to find connection with the built environment. Suejin is highly regarded for her technical design skills, innate creativity, and for the empathetic approach that she brings to every project. An inclusive collaborator, she works closely with colleagues, consultants, and clients through every project phase and is known for developing holistic, integrated solutions that inform, inspire, and fully embody the spirit and purpose of the client or brand. Her diverse portfolio encompasses engaging graphic integrations, art installations, and unique visual systems for signage and wayfinding for professional athletic facilities, cancer care facilities, children’s hospitals, hospitality and amenity spaces, corporate environments for the world’s leading tech companies, and more. In her personal time, Suejin delights her young daughter and loved ones with her intricately decorated homemade sugar cookies, bending royal icing to her will to create everything from narwhals to monstera leaves.

Sydney Patterson is an experiential graphics designer with 10 years of experience in wayfinding, placemaking, and experiential design. As an Associate at the RSM Design San Clemente studio, Sydney helps design and lead many projects, including mixed-use, retail, biotech campuses, and unique project types such as resorts, entertainment venues and master-plan communities. From the initial vision through implementation, Sydney utilizes principle-centered design in each step of the design process. Her focus is to help people identify with their environment so they can build lasting connections.

Sydney is a co-chair of the SEGD Orange County chapter and an active member of the Society of Experiential Graphic Design. She earned a B.A. in Design with honors, focusing on exhibition and graphic design, from the University of California, Davis.

David worked his way through college as a carpenter. After graduating from San Jose State University with a degree in Graphic Design, he became fascinated with combining graphic design and his understanding of fabrication. He began his career in the exhibit industry at a mid-size exhibit design and fabrication company. With an entrepreneurial spirit, David saw opportunities that the emerging computer graphics industry had to offer. In 1987 he founded Cannonball Graphics in San Jose, California. The company rapidly grew into a well-respected exhibit company. Seeing yet another business opportunity, David assembled an outstanding staff of more than 50 experienced professionals and re-branded Cannonball to create Splash in 1996, an experiential design and fabrication company.

In 2018, Splash was acquired by Image Options. In his current role at Image Options, David continues to work with architects and clients to solve complex challenges. He also enjoys sharing his experience with the next generation of designers. He has hosted several presentations for design agencies and SEGD chapters nationwide, including a popular series, “What+How,” which focuses on transforming great ideas into reality. When asked what inspires him today, David says “The energy derived from incorporating new technologies into the world of EGD and sharing that with some of the most creative people on the planet.”

Kenny Peskin is the Director of Industry Programs for the International Sign Association (ISA). Since 2007, Kenny has represented the on-premises sign industry in developing technical standards and responding to code issues across the country.

Kenny has specific expertise and a unique knowledge of the codes and standards that form the basis for many state and local sign regulations. Kenny currently serves on NFPA 70 National Electrical Code Code-Making Panel 18, International Code Council A117.1 Consensus Committee on Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities, Underwriters Laboratories’ Standards Technical Panel 48 for Electric Signs, and the Underwriters Laboratories’ Sign Industry Business Panel. Kenny also has represented ISA and the on-premises sign industry before numerous state Departments of Transportation rulemakings on billboards and outdoor advertising.

Kenny grew up in the sign industry, as his family manufactured custom electric signs in Youngstown, Ohio for nearly 100 years.

Jonathan Posnett is a Principal in the New York Office of Entro, with over 25 years of experience in the development of design and strategy-based solutions for clients striving to improve the user experience in the built environment. Jonathan's role as Principal focuses on client relationship development, with a focus on project management, creative direction and business development.

In his previous role as a Creative Director at Two Twelve, Jonathan Posnett contributed to the development of innovative solutions for a broad range of clients including New York's Met Life Stadium, Comcast Technology Center in Philadelphia, Cedars Sinai's Medical Center campus in LA, City of Richmond's vehicular and pedestrian way finding in Virginia and the Santa Fe Opera. Internationally, Jonathan has collaborated on projects in Europe, Canada and the UAE. With a clear focus on development of seamless and integrated communication in the built environment, Jonathan works to emphasize the user experience first and foremost.

Jonathan is an active member of SEGD involved with education initiatives and has lectured on Experiential Graphic Design process and communication. Professionally, Jonathan Posnett has advised the ISA in development of their professional services publications.

Jonathan Posnett graduated from the University of Derby in England with a degree in Graphic Design.

Greg Prickman was appointed the Eric Weinmann Librarian and Director of Collections in July 2018. Previously he was head of Special Collections at the University of Iowa Libraries. Prickman came to the University of Iowa Libraries in 2006, working as a special collections librarian and then as the assistant head of Special Collections and University Archives before becoming the head of Special Collections in 2011.

He was the instigator of DIY History (https://diyhistory.lib.uiowa.edu), a crowdsourcing transcription project for Civil War diaries and other digitized manuscripts, and the creator and lead developer of The Atlas of Early Printing (http://atlas.lib.uiowa.edu), a digital, publicly accessible map depicting the development of printing in Europe in the 15th century that uses GIS mapping.

Under his leadership, acquisitions to the library’s collections include the Gallup family papers, the Tom Brokaw papers, and the Brinton Collection of Early Film. He appears in a 2017 documentary featuring this collection entitled Saving Brinton (http://brintonfilm.com). He has also taught at the university’s Center for the Book and School of Library and Information Services.

Before Iowa, he worked at public, academic, and corporate libraries, including the Ebling Library at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Special Collections and Preservation Division of the Chicago Public Library. Prickman is a member of the Grolier Club and the Caxton Club, and serves on the International Working Group of the Bibliographical Society of America. He is a Director of the Consortium of European Research Libraries (CERL) and is a member of the Board of Directors for the English Short-Title Catalog, North America (ESTC/NA). A 1994 graduate of Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, Prickman majored in History and Studio Art with a printmaking focus. His MLS, with a specialization in Rare Books and Manuscripts, is from Indiana University.

Jemma is Experiential Design Director for IA Interior Architects’ Seattle Studio. Over her 20 year career she has had the opportunity to work with multi-disciplinary teams to bring holistic design solutions to branded environments both locally and around the world. Her passion is for authentic placemaking, strategic brand storytelling and user experience design within large public venues. She works at the intersection of Architecture, Interior Design, Brand Strategy and Graphic Design – drawing from each discipline and adding a deep understanding of user psychology and human centered design. Approaching a project from all angles and perspectives like this results in one of a kind environments that elevate the customer experience; orient, inform and delight; and ultimately generate revenue. She likes big budgets and she cannot lie, and she believes that ideas don’t run out – there are always more where that came from.

Loran Sanvido is currently an Adjunct Instructor at the University of Cincinnati in the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning, where she teaches undergraduate Communication Design students.

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Graphic Design from the University of Cincinnati and gained cooperative work experience at many multidisciplinary design firms that introduced her to the field of Experiential Design. Since completing her undergraduate degree, she has worked in Adidas and Reebok's Sports License Division in Boston, MA, and at Infinite Scale in Salt Lake City, UT. After a decade of designing for sports brands and companies, she turned her energy to teaching. She enjoys broadening students’ understanding of graphic design and introducing them to the fascinating world of experiential design.

Loran recently completed a Master of Design degree from the University of Cincinnati where she focused on creating an interdisciplinary Experiential Design certificate program for post-secondary design education. She is also an active member of SEGD’s Academic Task Force.

David Schwarz is an award-winning creative leader who’s spent his career designing brand experiences that integrate content, interactivity, architecture and technology. David has been featured in numerous publications like Creativity, Fast Company, Inc. Magazine, Communication Arts, Cool Hunting, FWA, The Hub, among others. He’s spoken at conferences for AIGA, The One Show, SEGD, SXSW, AdWeek, Cannes Lions, FITC, among others. He is also a mentor at New, Inc., the New Museum’s incubator program for art, technology, and design.

Internally, David focuses on making “space” for creativity. This means cultivating studio environments that foster collaboration and trust, that promote democratic contribution, and generate an open source repository of cultural, stylistic, and technological knowledge to inspire teams.

Jennifer A. Scott is an anthropologist, curator and public historian. For over 25 years, her work has explored connections between museums, arts, history and social justice. In 2022, The National Urban League appointed Jennifer as the founding Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Urban Civil Rights Museum in Harlem (UCRM). UCRM will be New York’s first museum dedicated to civil rights – and one of the first in the nation to focus on the history of civil rights in the North. Before stepping into her current post, Jennifer held executive positions at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit, Jane Addams Hull-House Museum in Chicago and Weeksville Heritage Center in Brooklyn. In 2020, the Chicago Mayor appointed her co-chair of the Chicago Monuments Project, a city-wide initiative created to help rethink the city’s monuments and public memorials and to invite new public art commissions. Jennifer is currently on the editorial board of The Public Historian, a journal of the National Council on Public History, and recently served as the Vice President of the Association of Midwest Museums and as a board member for the National Association for Museum Exhibition. For over 20 years, Jennifer has served as faculty at The New School for Public Engagement in New York. Jennifer researches, writes and lectures locally and internationally on arts and social change, contested histories and innovative strategies for museums and public history sites. Recent publications include: “Statues of Limitations: Are Museums the Rightful Home for Confederate Monuments?” (2019); “Designing for Outrage: Inviting Disruption and Contested Truth Into Museum Exhibitions”(2017), and “Reimagining Freedom in the Twenty-first Century at a Post-Emancipation Site" (2015).

Tré has been on a lifelong path when it comes to design: he's been practicing writing in cursive since he was in kindergarten; started his first business selling $3 graffiti-style name cards to his classmates between the ages of ten and eleven. He designed tattoos, bead jewelry, comic strips for the school paper, yearbooks, his first font, and more by high school. After graduating in 2015 with a degree in Visual Communication Design, Seals opened his own brand consultancy (2015-2020) known as Studio Seals. Through Studio Seals, he worked with over 250 partners, ranging from small startups to national and global brands (2015-2020).

Inspired by the lack of diversity in the graphic design industry, Tré launched the diversity-driven font foundry known as Vocal Type. Each typeface highlights a piece of history from a different underrepresented race, ethnicity, or gender—from the Women’s Suffrage Movement in Argentina to the Civil Rights Movement in America and beyond. Since founding Vocal Type in 2016, Seals’ fonts have gone from being inspired by progressive movements to becoming a part of them: taking shape in the form of Black Lives Matter street murals, brand campaigns for the 2020 Virtual March On Washington, political campaigns like that of Stacey Abrams, logos like the Amazon Labor Union, and so much more.

Now 29, Tré has been named an Ascender by the Type Directors Club, a Young Gun by the One Club for Creativity, a Black Design Visionary by Instagram and the Brooklyn Museum, and a Forbes 30 Under 30 Lister.

I collaborate with creative teams to develop solutions that help organizations become more responsive to the communities they serve. My work is driven by a commitment to advancing meaningful experiences and opportunities for communities to connect with content that is relevant to their lives. With more than 20 years of senior leadership experience in cultural resource management, I provide thoughtful and focused expertise; always mindful of industry standards, and trends in the field.

Before joining the Planet Word team, I was Principal at DeJesus and Associates, a planning and management firm I created in 2003 to respond to the unique needs of start-up organizations and organizations experiencing significant change. Prior to starting my own firm, I was Founding Executive Director/CEO of the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture. For 10 years, I planned, developed and managed the creation of this $33M state history museum, including building relationships with potential partners and donors. During my tenure, the museum secured a $5M endowment. The Museum opened in June 2005.

I received a B.A. in Political Science from Tuskegee University and an M.S. in Urban Affairs and Policy Analysis from the New School for Social Research in New York. I am a graduate of the J. Paul Getty Museum Management Institute and the Maryland Government Executive Institute.

Active in my community, I was appointed by Mayor Muriel Bowser to the Commission on Judicial Disabilities and Tenure; am a member of the Board of Trustees of the Historical Society of Washington, D.C.; and serve as a peer reviewer for the American Alliance of Museums. I am a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and served as Executive Director of the Ivy Foundation, a 501(c)3 community service foundation. A native of Maryland, I currently reside in Washington, D.C. with my husband and daughter.

Mara is all about the human experience. Her design work evokes emotion and is based in an
empathetic approach, recognizing the accessibility needs and life experiences of the people
who will inhabit the spaces she creates. Her work with exhibit design opportunities, including
content generation in collaboration with clients, is meaningful and memorable in equal
measure. She pioneered a new approach to artist coordination at NBBJ, sourcing artists
appropriate for the project needs and seamlessly integrating their work with the EGD elements.
Her belief that the future of design must be more sustainable drives Mara’s work with NBBJ’s
One Innovation EGD program. Designers are asked to define one new sustainable innovation for
each project, shifting our practice toward a greener future one small step at a time. She has had
the pleasure to work with innovative and influential clients such as Amazon, Google, Loma
Linda University Health, UCSF, Kaiser Permanente, and Lumen Field (Scarves Up, Seattle!),
alongside meaningful volunteer work with FareStart, Hugo House, and Refugee Artisan
Initiative.

As the Founder & CEO of Brice Consulting Group, LLC, Angie is a visionary non-profit executive who brings nearly two decades of expertise to the DEI, education, executive coaching, and talent management space. Angie’s impact began as a 5th grade Science teacher, where she led her students to achieve historic academic gains, in addition to being tapped for the ESL Teacher of the Year Award. Next, Angie went on to become a senior leader at Teach For America for a decade, where she led high-performing teams to recruit the largest and most diverse corps in Teach For America history, to serve first as classroom teachers, and then as systems-level leaders across various sectors. As the leading producer of top and diverse talent in the country, Angie has presented on her diversity recruitment expertise at the Harvard Graduate School of
Education’s Annual Alumni of Color Conference. Since then, she’s coached scores of organizations and C-Suite level executives – in non-profit, for-profit, start-up and academia spaces – to bolster their DEI commitment and deepen their social impact. Angie’s clients include the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum & Foundation, Whitney Museum of American Art, Harvard University, The Robertson Center at Success Academies, The Int’l Institute of New England, and Burton Snowboards, just to name a few.

Angie received her BA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her MA from Columbia University Teachers College. An avid reader and foodie, Angie resides with her hubby and two children, in Brooklyn, NY.

Jinelle Thompson is the Research and Partnerships Manager at Museum Hue. She is an arts administrator and cultural sector strategist working with cultural institutions to establish equitable partnerships and programming with communities across NYC. Through qualitative research, collaborative visioning, and anti-oppressive facilitation, Jinelle develops engagement strategies for the inclusion and empowerment of communities of color. They have organized workshops and public programs with artists, organizers, and activists concerning civic engagement, immigration, voting rights, and mass incarceration.

Most recently, Jinelle was the Manager of Strategic Partnerships at MoMA PS1 and served as the inaugural Voklswagen Fellow for Public Programs and Community Engagement where they collaborated with artists and community partners to conceptualize and develop the museum’s first suite of educational workshops and programs with youth and adult audiences. The qualitative and archival research she conducted on Long Island City and Queens were the foundation of the museum’s community outreach plan and resulted in reaching new audiences and community partnerships which continue today.

In addition to their work with museums and arts organizations, Jinelle has worked with libraries, social impact organizations, and elected officials in state and municipal government providing operations and administrative support through project and client management, strategic communications, and event administration.

Jinelle holds a Masters in Museum Studies and a Bachelors with honors in Sociology and Political Science with a concentration in Public Law.

Dr. Elizabeth (Dori) Tunstall is a design anthropologist, author of Decolonizing Design: A Cultural Justice Guidebook, and an organizational design catalyst and executive coach. A recognized leader in the decolonization of art and design education, she received the 2022 Sir Misha Black Award for Distinguished Service to Design Education as well as the inaugural BADG of Honour for Design Education from the Black Artists and Designers Guild.

With a global career, Dori served as the Dean of Design at Ontario College of Art and Design University in Canada, where she was the first black and black female dean of a faculty of design anywhere. She was an Associate Professor of Design Anthropology and Associate Dean at Swinburne University in Australia. She wrote the biweekly column Un-Design for The Conversation Australia. In the U.S., she taught at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She organized the U.S. National Design Policy Initiative and served as a director of Design for Democracy. Industry positions included UX strategists for Sapient Corporation and Arc Worldwide. Dori holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Stanford University and a BA in Anthropology from Bryn Mawr College.

Currently Director of Content at Local Projects, New York, Amanda White has 18 years' experience
leading content development for design. Prior to her current role, Amanda spent two years consulting to the United Nations as a Creative Director, following seven years as content lead at Thinc Design, New York. Originally from Aotearoa New Zealand, she was Head of Content at Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland Museum.

Amanda's expertise is in the combination of inspirational team leadership, lateral thinking, strategic
planning, and creative methodologies that she brings to all projects, transforming concepts into
impactful experiences for user engagement. Throughout her career she has prioritized community
collaboration as a vital component of the design process, and pursued methodologies for engaging,
inspiring, and mobilizing people to action.

Lance Wyman is considered one of the most influential graphic designers of our time, and is credited with helping to define the field of environmental graphic design. Lance Wyman (B.1937, Newark, NJ, USA) is a graphic designer specializing in systems for cities, events, institutions and transit systems. He founded Lance Wyman Ltd.in 1979 and has focused his work primarily on branding/wayfinding systems for public environments.

His graphic system for the 1968 Mexico City Olympicshas been cited as “one of the most successful in the evolution of visual identification.” 

Lance Wyman's early landmark work also includes branding/wayfinding for the Mexico City Metro, the National Zoo, and the Minnesota Zoo, which TIME magazine selected as one of the 10 best designs of 1981. His other successful public communication systems have included the original map for the Washington, D.C., Metro, branding and wayfinding signage for pedestrian skywalk systems in Calgary and Edmonton, the Amtrak High Speed Rail facility at Pennsylvania Station, the St. George Staten Island Ferry Terminal in New York, the American Museum of Natural History, and the New Mexico RailRunner railway system, among many others.

He teaches corporate and wayfinding design at Parsons where he has been a visiting lecturer since 1973.

A long time supporter of SEGD, Lance Wyman has been involved in the association for more than 20 years. He designed the 40th Anniversary limited edition poster for SEGD and has participated as a speaker in conferences and as a juror on the Global Design Awards multiple times.
