2024 SEGD Xlab: Exploring the Future of Technology-Infused Storytelling

SEGD's Xlab returns for its fourteenth year as the premier event dedicated to the intersection of experiential design and technology-driven storytelling for place. On Thursday November 7, 2024, Xlab will convene leading minds and innovative practices at the forefront of experience design. Attendees will dive deep into the cutting-edge developments in digital media, immersive and interactive environments, and the evolving landscape of cultural and consumer experiences. Join us for this unparalleled exploration of how technology is shaping the future of storytelling in our built environments.

SEGD Xlab is offering tours at five Brooklyn Navy Yard studios. Below are details and descriptions for each tour. Registration is required to attend. Transportation to and from the tours is on your own.

SEGD does not have an official room block for Xlab, but our venue, SVA Theatre, has provided a list of nearby hotels. We recommend Aloft New York Chelsea, Cambria New York Chelsea or Hyatt Place New York Chelsea. That said, since it's New York, you may already have a favorite spot to stay, and there are plenty of options in the area!

Phillip R. Tiongson is a Filipino American designer and leading authority on interactive technology. Tiongson’s work explores the ever-evolving interplay between design, technology and human attention. In 2005, he founded Potion, an experiential agency that specializes in integrating physical space with digital technology. In every engagement, he seeks to design inclusive experiences that reflect an organization’s core values and culture. In 2024, Potion joined forces with Hyperquake, an independent strategy and design studio that builds ambitious brands and experiences with those eager to activate a vision. Tiongson currently serves on MIT’s Council for the Arts, a catalyst and funder for the development of a broadly based, highly participatory arts program and speaks about technology, design, and culture. Phillip’s projects have been honored by the American Alliance of Museums, the Association of Science and Technology Centers, SEGD, Fast Company, Communication Arts, SXSW, Core 77, and the Art Director’s Club. Selected clients include the Richard Avedon Foundation, Smithsonian National Museums, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Asia Society, the Rubin Museum of Art, Smithsonian Networks, Yale University Press, NYU Langone Medical Center, Westchester Medical Center, St. Regis Hotel, and Nike.

Phillip earned his MS from the MIT Media Lab and his MFA in Film Directing from Columbia University. Born and raised in rural Tennessee, he can’t believe that he lives with his wife and two kids in NYC.

Infusing over two decades of design excellence into her role as CEO of SEGD, Cybelle Jones is not just a leader but a passionate advocate for the transformative power of experience design. Firmly grounded in the conviction that design has the capability to engender positive change, Cybelle drives her multidisciplinary community to create experiences that intimately connect people with places.

As the helm of SEGD, a non-profit member organization, Cybelle champions education, innovation, and design excellence. She works tirelessly to inspire the design of more equitable, sustainable, and user-centric environments, reflecting her belief in the pivotal role design plays in shaping our world.

Before taking the reins at SEGD, Cybelle etched a notable career as Principal of G&A. Her 25+ year tenure saw her lead several acclaimed design projects, including the National WWII Museum, the International Spy Museum, and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum. These high-profile undertakings not only attest to her design prowess but also her ability to infuse creativity with strategic insights.

Cybelle’s influence extends beyond SEGD. As a thought leader, she has addressed audiences at prestigious forums like AAM, the V&A, FIT, AIGA, and MuseumNext. Her active involvement on various boards sees her push the boundaries of experience design, contributing to the evolution of the profession.

Driven by passion, guided by experience, and committed to innovation, Cybelle Jones is a beacon in the realm of design, illuminating the path to a more user-centric, equitable, and sustainable future.

Scott Brown is a long-time technologist and nine-time entrepreneur with a strong history of building companies from inception to exit. Currently, he is the CEO of Immersion, a platform that is democratizing the predictive power of neuroscience. Scott was recognized on the Global Corporate Venturing Powerlist for his work running early-stage VC for the global broadband industry.

As an active angel investor, advisor, and bestselling author, Scott has helped hundreds of startups perfect their pitch with a framework he created called (C)lean Messaging. Available on Amazon, (C)lean Messaging is a system that helps innovators and entrepreneurs talk to humans.

A sought-after speaker, Scott has presented around the world for Fortune 500 companies, startup events, TEDx, and many more. His unique perspectives on corporate innovation and entrepreneurship have inspired thousands. From Hamlet to hiring and (C)lean Messaging to the Speculative Startup, Scott is known to speak about the magic that happens when ideas collide.

In 2016, Scott is credited with inventing the world’s first bacon-wrapped tot.

Myles is a Creative Director and Integrator.
Currently serving as Managing Director and Creative Director at Potion, part of the Hyperquake family. Myles' excels in bridging storytelling through interactive design in both physical and digital spaces, leading cohesive departments across design and technology disciplines. With a background in motion design, technical direction, and visual effects, Myles has transitioned into experiential design, aiming to create profound moments that influence lives. They lead teams, scope projects, build environments, animate, write, code, and occasionally break things.
Myles’s strengths lie in visual design, motion, spatial, and digital projects, seeing them through to completion with a cohesive creative process. They build teams based on non-hierarchical principles, bringing the best ideas to drive projects from bid to install. As a discipline director, integrator, and studio head, Myles executes excellent work and facilitates excellent teams.

Man-Wai Cheung is the founder and creative director of Adolescent, a creative agency based in New York City. He brings over 30 years of creative direction and design experience to his work at Adolescent, from London and NYC, including Brand Union, MTV, Attik, and Manhattan Transfer.

Man-Wai’s design philosophy is building ideas from the ground up, thinking in a 360-degree approach, and always encouraging everyone on his team of visionaries to think strategically and creatively in broadcast, digital, and out-of-home media. No project is too strange or complex for the Adolescent team.

This unique approach proved wildly successful for Man-Wai and his team, attracting collaborations with Outfront Media, Lego, NBCUniversal, Porsche, The Seaport, Morgan Stanley, Disney, Smithsonian, Coca-Cola, and many more.

Coming from a fine art and performing arts background, I have always been fascinated in breaking the known formats of experiences and rebuilding them from the audience up. Part of the core team that designed Sleep No More in NYC, my work consistently aims to translating the emotional and functional needs of the audience into dynamic experiences, the alchemy that places people and innovation at the heart of a process, and aims to deepen the understanding of a connected human experience.

I have spent the last 9 years at Meta working at the intersection of innovation and technologies through experiential and retail and am very excited about how these innovations will fundamentally change how we experience the world and each other.

Eli Kuslansky is a Brooklyn-born artist, co-host of the Art Movez radio show and podcast, and a Partner and Chief Strategist at Unified Field, an international award-winning creative innovation firm. He is an internationally recognized thought leader on the use of digital media and artificial intelligence in museums and experience design, cultural institutions of the future, and the evolution of Legible Cities, the humanistic smart city.

For over 35 years, he specialized in experience design, interactive media, digital communications, responsive immersive environments, and omni-channel media projects. At Unified Field he leads creative and design strategy in the design and production of multi-million-dollar installations for the world’s leading museums, brands, designers, and architects. He’s collaborated on projects with Alicia Keyes for Sony, David Byrne for Pace Galleries, and Carl Hancock Rux for the Brooklyn Academy of Music (pending).

A graduate of Cooper Union, he was a curator at South Street Seaport Museum, and the Texas State Maritime Museum, and Director of Technology at Ralph Appelbaum Associates. He is currently the Chair of the Arts Innovation Advisory Group for the Brooklyn Arts Council, and a co-host of Art Movez, a radio show and podcast on WNYE 91.5 FM, about art, innovation, and social justice, and a mentor for the New Museum’s New Inc creative incubator.

Chris is an award-winning motion designer specializing in creating immersive media experiences. Since joining RLMG in 2012, Chris has embraced the creative potential of large-scale, unconventional media design, particularly in museum and public installations.

With a focus on experience design, Chris believes in the power of spatially-activated media to captivate audiences, communicate meaningful stories, and leave a lasting impact. His projects with RLMG span the globe in many forms and utilize various cutting-edge technologies.

Recent projects include a 360-degree theater at the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum that tells the Creation Story of the Agua Caliente people and a projection-mapped installation at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures documenting the rise of early Hollywood.

Dana is Co-Chair of the SEGD Atlanta Chapter. He leads the outreach of Nanolumens' dvLED design and support capabilities to the AEC community, is member of ABPM, and responsible for sales development in the EMEA region.

Dana’s professional career is most shaped by nearly 20 years with The Weather Channel. During that time, he helped grow the Network from its pre-launch status, through the challenging and fledgling years, to the ubiquitous multi-billion-dollar brand it is today.

Over the past decade with Nanolumens he’s helped build the organization into a leadership position that creates wonder and provides memorable experiences in physical spaces. This is both a passion and a winning point of differentiation in what has become a crowded marketplace of suppliers of dvLed technology.

He is a high-performance sales and business development executive defining the future of dvLED visualization solutions for the design community and forward-leaning corporations.

SStephanie Stewart has been the Head of Creative at RLMG since the company’s inception. As co-executive director, Stephanie is now leading the company into an exciting new chapter of employee-ownership, deepening our commitment to our clients, our partners, our audiences and one another. Stephanie has directed projects at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, History Colorado, and the Museum of Fine Arts/Boston, among others. Before joining RLMG, Stephanie created and oversaw Art Close Up, a public television series about contemporary artists at WGBH. Over an eight-year span, it garnered dozens of awards and became a haven for video-based artists to express the stories of other artists. Stephanie also spent a year at M.I.T.’s Hyperstudio, a lab dedicated to developing tools for the scholarly and pedagogical practice of digital humanities. She has guest lectured at Harvard, Yale, Brandeis, Boston University and the Massachusetts College of Art.

Judith Zissman believes in the power of transformative experiences to build understanding, forge connection, invite possibility, and inspire change. As Executive Creative Director of Blue Telescope, she leads teams of designers and technologists in creating digital interactives with compelling stories and human connection.

Judith began her career in independent film production and distribution in New York City, then expanded to digital media and web technology, moving to Silicon Valley to explore new opportunities for innovation and product development before returning to the world of experience design with Blue Telescope.

Her cross-industry foundation in creative problem solving, client relationship management, and product ideation and strategy complements her expertise in experience design, fine art, and narrative strategy. A passion for inclusivity and diversity fuels her desire to use her skills to create memorable work that reflects, celebrates, and shares the scope of human experience.

At Blue Telescope, Judith relishes the opportunity to bring projects with difficult or complex topics to life with rigor, compassion, and clarity. Recent clients include Sloan History Gallery, Kennedy Space Center, Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum, Sing Sing Prison Museum, and Historic Hudson Valley (Kofi’s Fire). Judith graduated with honors in Modern Culture and Media from Brown University and is a volunteer with Tech for Campaigns.
